CBT 101

What is Cognitive behavioral therapy ?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely researched and effective forms of therapy for anxiety, overthinking, stress and a lot of other mental health concerns.

CBT is based on the understanding that our thoughts, emotions and behaviors are all connected. When we develop unhelpful patterns of thinking, they can influence how we feel and how we respond to situations. Over time, these patterns can become automatic and begin shaping our daily lives without us even realizing it.

The goal of CBT therefore is to help you identify patterns and thoughts that are no longer serving you, challenge them and replace them with newer and healthier ways of responding to life’s challenges. CBT is more than just “thinking positive” though. It helps you develop a balanced, realistic but also compassionate mindset towards yourself and your environment.

HOW IT WORKS

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM VIRTUAL CBT in PENNSYLVANIA

CBT is a practical, skills-based form of talk therapy that helps you understand the connection between your thoughts, emotions and behaviors and learn new ways of responding to everyday challenges.

At Space Between The Words, our unique approach to CBT is always trauma-informed and neurodivergent-affirming. That means we move at a pace that respects your nervous system, take into account experiences like overwhelm, burnout, masking or emotional intensity and avoid overly simplistic “just change your thoughts” frameworks. Our goal is never to override your current experience but rather to understand it more deeply so that we can create a more meaningful and longer-lasting transformation.

We’ll start by exploring what brings you to therapy, what you’re experiencing every day and how you’d like your life to change. Together, we’ll set goals that you’d like to work towards and develop a therapy plan to help you achieve them.

This work starts by looking more closely at the connections between your thoughts, emotions and behaviors. That includes things like automatic thoughts, identifying what triggers certain responses in you and which repeating patterns are keeping you stuck.

Once we start recognizing these patterns, we’ll look at the beliefs and assumptions behind them. We’ll practice questioning unhelpful thoughts, considering alternative perspectives and developing a more balanced and compassionate way of looking at yourself and your experiences.

The heart of CBT is to develop practical strategies that help you respond differently to challenging situations. This might involve setting boundaries, approaching situations you’ve been avoiding, managing difficult emotions or breaking larger tasks into more manageable steps.

Another big part of CBT involves putting what you learn in session into practice outside of our sessions. We’ll identify opportunities for you to try new approaches in your daily life, reflect on what works and what doesn’t and always make necessary adjustments along the way.

As we continue working together, we’ll regularly check in on your progress, revisit your goals and explore what’s changing. The aim is to help you build confidence in using these tools independently, so you feel better equipped to navigate future challenges.

INSURANCE & FEES

WE ACCEPT MOST MAJOR INSURANCE PLANS

We know therapy can already feel hard enough to start. Cost and insurance confusion shouldn’t make it harder. That’s why we partner with Headway to accept over 45 insurance plans as in-network providers, including Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Carelon, Independence Blue Cross (IBX), Quest and more.

If your insurance isn’t in-network through Headway, you may still be able to receive reimbursement through out-of-network benefits using a service like Mentaya. If you’re unsure how any of this works, we can walk you through your options and help you figure out the best solution
